To begin with, we are very
impressed with how everyone conducted themselves on the air. Even in
the heat of competition, the participants demonstrated sportsmanship
and good operating. May I take this opportunity to thank each and every
one who took part in our 2nd Annual 2 Meter FM Simplex Challenge.
This year's logs showed a definite trend toward medium and low power.
Many stations which ran medium and low power ran up commendable scores,
including the contest's overall winner. The most competitive class was
the Fixed Medium, which included stations like KB1HNZ with 754 points,
KB1TUR with 546 points, and N1OXA with 360 points.
The wonderful success our contest enjoyed this year was due in large
part to the mobile activity. We appreciate those stations who operated
mobile despite the winter weather and high gas prices - kudos! Some of
these stations included: W1CPS, who operated from the Gorham,
Scarborough, and Standish areas, W1VFO, who ventured to Cornish,
Baldwin, Hiram, and Steep Falls, N1NJB, who was mobile in Jackson,
Newburg, Bangor, and Old Town, KB1AES, who was logged in the Waldo,
Brooks, and Knox areas, N1ITK, who was traveling through Jackson,
Dixmont, and Etna, and N1XP, who covered Scarborough and South
Portland.
This year also saw the first stations logged from the Granite State,
including KB1WDW of Wellesley, Massachusetts, who was operating
portable from Pinkham Notch, and KB1RJC, in Madison, New Hampshire.
There were a lot of new call signs in the logs, and participation was
up overall, especially in the Bangor and Mid Coast regions of the
state. Now that's what we like to see! Thanks to everyone who helped to
get the word out - the Maine Section of the ARRL, all the clubs who
listed it on their sites, and all the hams who talked about it on the
air!
We're already looking forward to next year's Simplex Challenge! We
appreciate all the feedback and kind words you send back with your
logs. Very few changes are anticipated for next year, and the Simplex
Challenge should be around for a long time. Since KD1O has passed the
70 QSO mark, we're considering establishing a 2 Meter Century Club
Certificate for all stations who make over 100 QSO's during the contest
(just to give you something to shoot for).
Thanks again! See you next year!
73,
Thom Watson, W1WMG
