QSL Corner
Above
is a QSL for a report by Tim Watson KB1HNZ on 648 kHz, from 0015-0045
UTC, on 7 July 2020. Radio Caroline, which now operates legally under a
Community Radio licence, was famous for operating as an off-shore
pirate radio station, broadcasting pop music all day in a time when the
BBC only played pop music for one hour a day. Ironically, it's current
frequency, 648 kHz, was once used by the BBC World Service to relay
broadcasts to Eastern Europe.
DX News
Our
last issue left off just prior to the Holiday season, where in a normal
year, there'd be several announced DXpeditions throughout the winter
months. Obviously, many of those plans were postponed due to the
ongoing pandemic, but there were still a few DXpeditions,
including YI9WS (Iraq), 5T7OO (Mauritania), and JD1BMH (Ogasawara)
through the end of December, and CP1XRM (Bolivia) from January 9-26,
and 8Q7CQ (Maldives) from January 14-29.
In
the weeks ahead we look forward to a Japanese DXpedition to Samoa,
using call sign 5W7X, that is scheduled to begin March 5th, (with no
end date announced yet), WW6RG will operate mostly 20m SSB from the
Marshall Islands (KH9), on April 1st, PZ5JW will be QRV for the CQMM DX
contest, from Surinam, on April 17-18th, and ON4RU will operate as
FM/OQ3R from Martinique, from May 23-June 5th (QRV for the WPX CW
Contest.
